Prez Corner

It was a tough day after turning our clocks ahead and the first tee time being 9:00 a.m.  There were some bleary-eyed individuals out there.  The time change affected people differently.  Jacqueline Johnson McCourt wore shorts and a thin warm up jacket.  And yes, she rued her decision by the second hole.  Of course, Amy Stout always wears shorts no matter what the weather, but she had a little more warmth on top.  Linda Lockyer played lights out golf while other struggled.   I forgot the swag and our business cards with our schedule for the members who missed the lunch.  I forgot to tell people to write a blurb about their foursome.  I never saw Jenny Ang or Lynne Funkhouser; they flew in right before their tee time and flew out to catch a concert.

We had a good turn out.  Only one position short of 24.  We had the Irish green ball tournament within our regular tournament where the green ball rotates among the foursome for each hole.  Players keep track of the score of the green ball.  Fun but oh so nerve wracking when you are facing a pond of water on the tee.  Two teams lost their bal.  The results are::

Low Net 1st Place                                       Amy Stout - 70 (30)
Low Net 2nd Place                                      Althea Peng - 70 (33)
Closest to Pin Zinfandel #2                         Mary Bordeaux
Closest to Pin Merlot #8                              Althea Peng
Longest Drive - Zinfandel #5                       Aimee Gordon (Guest)
Fewest Putts                                               Althea Peng (32)
Irish Green Ball                                           Lynne Funkhouser, Jenny Ang, Deb Zipp, Linda Lockyer with a Team Net of 72

Pithy Comments:
So I don't have to repeat myself each tournament:  Each foursome should elect one person to write a pithy, waggish paragraph about their round.  That person should send the paragraph to me.  With the results of the tourney, I will send out the little snippets.  Here is an example of Deb Zip's foursome:

Foursome 1:   Lynne Funkhouser, Jenny Ang, Deb Zipp  and Linda Lockyer.   Surprising us all, Linda Lockyer started the round with par on Zin #1 and even with her tragic 13 on Merlot #5, which we dubbed the Bermuda Triangle, finished with the lowest net of the foursome with a 73. Lynne carded 3 pars for her round and Jenny carded back to back pars on the front.   Deb  had a thrilling chip-in for no putts on Merlot #1.   Unfortunately, after hitting the green on the following Par 3, she entered the Twilight Zone and 3-putted. She followed that with two more 3-putts and (yikes!) a 4-putt. The Team, however, prevailed in Irish Green Ball with a net score of 72. Go team!

Foresome 2:
Representing the foursome of Mary (OMG what a shot on Zin #2) Bordeaux, Laurie (on injured reserve due to her skiing accident so I had to fill in) Daniels, Aimee (isn’t there a rule against bringing long driving guests?) Gordon, and Althea Peng.  Pithy?  All I can say is… everyone on our team had great shots, and everyone won something – except me!  Althea had a fabulous day—This was a day where we three were the Supremes and Althea was Diana Ross.
Can’t wait for the next event.  And hoping the Par Tee Girls will bring back a low gross award.  A girl can dream.

Maria Kay and I overdosed on OTC pain meds, Tylenol Extra Strength for me and Aleve (I think) for Maria. We have bum knees. Her injury is far more serious than mine. But because of the drugs, we did just swell. And Katie N. deserves a shout-out for having conquered her first course post ACL surgery which kept her from us for a WHOLE YEAR!  We missed her a ton and are delighted to have her back.

Susan Q and Anna Marie, our two newest members, were a pleasure to meet and play with and we all had a blast.  Except for when they each had to take a 9 stroke penalty (or was it 7?) on that damn Par 3 with that damn pond to the left. That was painful--especially because we couldn't figure out where the drop area was.  Still, I can safely guess that it was not quite as painful as that 17 (or was it more?) I had to take at Sharp Park last Fall which a few of you simply won't let me forget. That was painful and hilarious. Well, no, it was just painful.

Even after that disastrous Par 3 and almost losing it on, I think, the 16th hole, we managed to keep our Irish Green Ball in play, thanks to Julie Fong's patient group of hawkeyes behind us. But because of those SB-ers (wink wink) in Group #1, it was all for naught.  See you ladies in a month or two.  Or maybe even sooner if I can make it to AWG.

Group 6...the Last.

Julie/Lana/Carmela/Linda Johnson.  We had lots of laughs during our round and found it strange that whoever was in possession of the "green ball" felt a little intimidated.  Nobody wanted to be the one to lose it.  We really got into "group think" mode when the ball went down the ravine.....Carmela made an incredible rescue shot from the mini grand canyon back onto the fairway. Red stakes and all, she was a trooper.  Oh and there were a couple 4 putts -- dang the greens were tough.  No prizes for our 4 some, but we came home with the Green Ball and remembered to pick up the markers (thanks to Linda J).
